Summary:
Most people were led to believe during their schooling that the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony suffered and starved for the first few years because they just didn’t know how to survive in the New World. It wasn’t until Squanto taught them to put a dead fish under each cornstalk that they grew enough corn to make it through the winter.
Well, Squanto did teach them the fish trick, but that wasn’t what saved them. According to Plymouth Colony Governor William Bradford himself, it was getting rid of their socialist economic system that turned their misery to prosperity. Socialism also failed in the Jamestown Colony in Virginia and in at least 119 voluntary socialist societies in early 19th century America.
